Obituary

Alan P. Burger, age 73, went home to be with the Lord on July 10, 2025, surrounded by his loving family in the comfort of his home in Osceola, Indiana.

Born on July 27th, 1951, to Alice and Billy Joe Burger, Alan proudly served his country in the United States Air Force (1971-1974) as a Military Police Officer during the Vietnam War (March, 1972-1973). He was on the last military flight back during the pull-out of Vietnam. He later built a dedicated career at AM General, where he also served as a Union Steward, advocating for his coworkers with integrity and strength.

Alan had a deep passion for life, especially when it came to his hobbies and his family. He loved taking rides on his Harley and cruising in his cherished 1979 Corvette—always with his beloved wife Donna by his side. He was a devoted fan of Notre Dame football, the Green Bay Packers, and the Atlanta Braves. He also loved attending Penn High School sporting events, alongside his brother Bill, where they cheered proudly and shared in their love of local athletics. Alan enjoyed drag racing, fishing, building model cars, and working on his train set. A true craftsman and problem solver, he spent countless hours in his shop working on projects, always ready to fix, build, or create something.

Alan also had a special place in his heart for his dogs—especially his Great Danes. Over the years, he cared deeply for each one of them, with his last and most loyal companion, Sampson, continuing to watch over the family and missing him dearly.

More than anything, Alan loved supporting his children and grandchildren—he rarely missed a game, meet, or event, and was a proud and present figure in their lives.

Alan shared a remarkable 43-year marriage with his devoted wife, Donna Burger. Their love story began more than 60 years ago, a bond that grew from childhood friendship into a lifetime of love, laughter, and unwavering support. Donna was not only his wife but his best friend, and their deep connection was a constant source of strength and joy for both of them.

He is survived by Donna and their children: Melissa Burger (mother, Billy Purdy), Alicia Weaver, Emily (Scott) Swanson, Alan (Bridgette) Burger, and Aaron (Nikolet) Burger. Alan was a proud grandfather to 12 beautiful grandchildren and 2 precious great-grandchildren, who brought endless joy to his life. He is also survived by his siblings, Bill (Cindy) Burger and Karen Burger.

Alan was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and Billy Joe Burger, and his beloved in-laws, Dorothy and Sid Spohn.

A celebration of Alan's life will be held on Thursday, July 17th, at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Osceola. Visitation will take place from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., with a memorial service beginning at 4:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) in honor of Alan's service and commitment to fellow veterans.

Though deeply missed, Alan's legacy lives on in the lives of those he loved. We rejoice in knowing he is now at peace in the presence of his Savior, and we give thanks for the gift of his life, his love, and his steady devotion to family and faith.
