Abert Meixel, Jr., died in his home on Saturday, May 3rd, surrounded by family. He was 83.
Albert lived in the Mishawaka area his entire life. Born April 2nd, 1942, during World War II, he proudly remembered recognizing his father returning from service, having known him only from photographs.
As a teenager, he competed as a middleweight boxer, and he was known to use his physical strength to stand up for others.
He was employed for 31 ½ years at Bendix Corporation, which later became AlliedSignal, where he served in multiple roles — most notably in the brakes department, making braking systems for Boeing 747 airplanes. He was a valued worker and served on a team that received the 1996 Presidential Award.
He worked hard at home, too. Summer days often found him outside, mowing, gardening, or finishing up a project with a jug of ice water, a sweat rag, and an aspiring daughter or grandson in tow.
Albert was no stranger to fun, however, and he found great pleasure in golfing, playing cards, baking, cooking, and spending time with friends and family.
In his later life, he spent twenty years as a snowbird, traveling every winter to Harlingen, TX, to enjoy shuffleboard, yard games, and trips across the border into Mexico.
He was an active and social member of the Ireland Road Church of God congregation, and he lived his values of family and faith by opening his home as a shelter to others in times of need.
Albert was loved by many people for many reasons and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Phyllis Meixel, his older brother, Roy Meixel, his two daughters, Caroline Lisenko and Lisa (Mike) Smith, his four grandsons, Zak (Mackenzie) Kelver, Joshua (Ashley) Kelver, Caleb Lisenko, and Gabriel Lisenko, and his eight great-grandchildren, Adisynne, Mason, Judah, Gemma, Lilah, Natalee, Silas, and August.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Meixel, Sr., and Donnabelle Meixel, his older sister, Carol Lechlitner, his sister-in-law Janice Meixel, and his son-in-law, Brian Lisenko.
Family and friends are invited to a viewing on Friday, May 16th, from 11:00am-1:00pm at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home at 10776 McKinley Hwy, Osceola, IN 46561, with a service to follow at 1:00pm.
