Alice M. Humphrey, age 89, of Elkhart, passed away Thursday, August 11, 2011 at Golden Living Center in Elkhart. Alice was born November 19, 1921 in Irondale, MO. Alice graduated from Southeast Missouri State Teachers College in 1946 with a Bachelors of Science degree in secondary education. She taught in Missouri schools for four years before marriage.
As Alice Miller, she married Meriadath Humphrey in Flat River, MO on May 26, 1946. He survives, along with two daughters, Becci Humphrey and Karla Humphrey, both of CO, and three sons; Fred (Susan) Humphrey of N.C., Tim (Carolyn) Humphrey of Kokomo, IN, and Mark (Sue) Humphrey of Bristol, IN. Surviving as well are four grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Alice was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
She came to the Elkhart area with her husband in 1950 where she was active with the Elkhart Literacy Council. She taught in the Baugo Schools, and later, as a homebound and substitute teacher in Elkhart, Concord, and Goshen Schools. After retirement, she continued as literacy volunteer, teaching English as a second language to foreign born students at Concord Jr. High School.
Visitation will be held from 5-9 pm Monday, August 15, 2011 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Osceola. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home with interment to follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
Alice was a member of the Hively Avenue Mennonite Church and was actively involved in Church Women United, serving as 1st Vice President.
The Humphrey family wishes to thank the members of Hively Avenue Mennonite Church for their support throughout the years, and the staff and nurses at Golden Living Center for their care and concern for Alice while she was in their care.
