Obituary

Barney James Messick, age 86, of Elkhart, Indiana, passed away at 7:15 pm Saturday, November 7, 2009 at Elkhart General Hospital. Barney was born September 30, 1923 in Manchester, Tennessee to the late J.Q. and Myrtle (Brown) Messick. On March 2, 1957, he married the Anita Marie Robinson in Woodbury, Tennessee.
She survives, along with four sons, Brian (Robin) Messick of Middlebury, Indiana, Jeff (Kim) Messick of Elkhart Indiana and Dallas, Texas, Darren (Cathy) Messick of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Stephen (Christine) Messick of Goshen, Indiana. Also surviving are two brothers, Ralph (Bobbie) Messick of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Jerry Messick of St. Louis, Missouri, seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and eight step-grandchildren. Barney was preceded in death by his siblings Chrisly Arlen Messick, Evans Messick, and Jessie Pearl Green.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 pm Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Osceola, Indiana. There will also be one hour of calling prior to the 10:00 am funeral service on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at Calvary Assembly of God, 1010 East Mishawaka Road, Elkhart, Indiana 46517. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola.
Barney served his Country during the WWII era in the U.S. Navy, and then enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War era before his honorable discharge in 1956. Mr. Messick was employed by Miles Laboratory (Bayer) in Elkhart for the last seventeen years of his career before his retirement in 1989. He attended the Calvary Assembly of God in Elkhart for many years, and in his spare time enjoyed working in his lawn, gardening, and riding his bicycle. In his memory, contributions may be made to the Calvary Assembly of God in Elkhart.
