Benita Caromay (Boger) Sorgenfrei, 89, of Mishawaka, Indiana, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of boundless love, deep faith, and joyful spirit that will live on in all who were blessed to know her. Born on March 9, 1937, in Mishawaka to Ben H. and Dellia O. (Schroff) Boger, Benita’s life was a beautiful testament to kindness, compassion, and the simple, powerful gift of making others feel loved.
On July 11, 1959, Benita married her soulmate and lifelong partner, John “Jack” Ronald Sorgenfrei. Together they built a life full of devotion, laughter, and shared purpose. Their love was steady and enduring, a true partnership that carried them through the years until Jack’s passing on September 16, 1999. Whether tending to their garden side by side, sharing quiet moments at home, or surrounding themselves with family, their bond was a shining example of love rooted in faith and commitment.
Benita was a proud graduate of Mishawaka High School and later attended Ivy Tech, where she followed her natural calling to care for others. As a Certified Nursing Assistant for 25 years, she brought comfort, dignity, and compassion to those she served. She didn’t simply do her job; she gave of her heart. Her gentle presence, warm smile, and genuine concern for others made her a light in the lives of so many.
Her faith was the foundation of her life. A lifelong and devoted member of United East Methodist Church of Mishawaka, Benita was always present, always giving, always serving, always loving. As a leader of the Sarah Elizabeth Circle, she nurtured not only her own faith but the faith of those around her. Her love for God was evident in her actions, in her kindness, and in the way she treated every person as someone worthy of care and compassion.
To know Benita was to experience joy. She was wonderfully goofy, endlessly funny, and filled with a childlike wonder that never faded. She had a vivid imagination and a playful spirit, often delighting children by talking to stuffed animals or creating silly character voices that would fill a room with laughter. Her humor was gentle and pure, never at anyone’s expense, only ever meant to bring smiles. She truly was a “goofball” in the most loving and beautiful sense, and her laughter was a gift that lifted everyone around her.
Benita loved deeply and without condition. She expressed her love freely, through warm hugs that made you feel safe, sweet kisses, and playful teasing that reminded you how much you meant to her. She was the kind of person who would give you the shirt off her back without hesitation. Her heart was open to everyone. She was never harsh, never unkind, never aggressive, only ever patient, understanding, and full of grace. It is no surprise that she was so deeply loved by all who knew her.
Her greatest joy in life was her family, especially her beloved daughter, Julie Ann Sorgenfrei. Benita’s love for Julie was immeasurable, fierce, tender, and unwavering. She was the heart of her family, the one who kept everyone connected, the steady and loving presence who made sure no one ever felt alone. Her home, and her heart, were always open.
In the quiet rhythms of her daily life, Benita found happiness in simple pleasures. She enjoyed playing solitaire, reading her magazines and newspapers, and caring for her beloved indoor plants. In her younger years, she found joy in playing musical instruments and spending time gardening with Jack, nurturing life both inside and out. And she always had a special place in her heart for chewy chocolate chip cookies, a small but sweet reminder of her warm and comforting nature.
What Benita leaves behind is far greater than memories, she leaves a legacy. A legacy of faith that never wavered, of love that never ran out, and of a spirit that brought light into every room she entered. She taught those around her how to love more freely, laugh more often, and give more generously. She showed, through her life, that the simplest acts of kindness can have the deepest impact.
Benita’s life was a blessing, her love was a gift, and her memory will be treasured beyond words. Though she may be gone from our sight, her laughter, her warmth, and her beautiful, giving heart will remain with us always. We will miss her deeply, hold her closely in our hearts, and forever be grateful for the love she shared so freely with us all.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Jack; her siblings, Robert Boger and Betty Pendl; and her brother-in-law, John Pendl.
She is survived by her cherished daughter, Julie Ann Sorgenfrei, along with extended family members and countless lifelong friends who will forever carry her love in their hearts.
