Elkhart — Benjamin Herschel Starkweather, 88, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on May 22, 2026, at Elkhart Meadows.

Benjamin was born on November 15, 1937, in South Bend to the late William and Wilma (Wilds) Starkweather. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Larry Starkweather, Bill Starkweather, and Bob Starkweather; and his sisters, Karen Atwater, Joyce “Gracie” Starkweather, Donna Pritchard, and Lois Sims.

A proud graduate of New Carlisle High School, Class of 1956, Benjamin went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Army for 13 years, including a tour in Vietnam. His family lovingly honors his service with the words: “Welcome home.”

Benjamin was a devoted father, grandfather, veteran, and friend who found great joy in fishing and spending time outdoors. He also enjoyed Nascar and Indy car racing. A skilled carpenter by trade, he helped build many homes throughout the local community, leaving behind not only structures, but a legacy of hard work and craftsmanship that will endure for generations.

He was a proud member of the American Legion, as well as the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.

Benjamin is survived by his children, Troy Starkweather (Nora Fisher) and Diana Cole (Fred Sawyer); grandchildren, Justin Cole, Travis Cole, Rachel Starkweather, and Joshua Starkweather; great-grandchildren, Kayden and Gionna and expected great-grandchild Elijah. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

A graveside service with U.S. Army honors assisted by Goshen Veterans Honor Guard will be held Thursday, May 28, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

Chapel Hill Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
