Betty Y. Bennett, 81, passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by her family Friday, February 16, 2018. Betty was born on February 24, 1936 in Hunter, North Dakota to the late George and Alice (Elliott) Nordgren. She and her husband, Jim, were wed on August 24, 1957 in Port Huron, Michigan. Betty and Jim celebrated fifty-eight years of marriage until his passing on October 8, 2015. Betty was a Bethel College graduate. While at Bethel she studied Piano Performance and Elementary Education. She received her Master's degree in Education from Michigan State. Mrs. Bennett was an educator for over thirty years with Niles Community Schools. She and Jim were past members of NCHA (National Campers & Hikers Association) and served as National Chaplain, providing ministry and music. Betty was actively involved in the ministry of her local church, playing piano and organ. She also had a love for Prairie Camp (Goshen, IN) where she faithfully played the piano and organ, and led the Afterglow with her husband for more than thirty years. While Jim held the position of President at Bethel College, Betty was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary and supported her husband's position at the college. After her retirement, Betty led the Rhythm Band at Hubbard Hill Retirement Community. She also played keyboard in the musical group formed at Heartland Retirement Community in Haines City, Florida. Music has always had a special place in her life. All who knew Betty will remember the joy she brought to any room when sitting behind a piano or organ, masterfully playing a tune. Betty is survived by her daughter, Carrie (Dale) Fish of Granger, IN; son, Jim (Alisa) Bennett of Elkhart, IN; brother, Elliott (Shirley) Nordgren of Edwardsburg, MI; sister, Eileen (Dale) Guckenberger of Maineville, OH; four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. In honor of Betty's legacy, her family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Bethel College Education Fund, 1001 Bethel Circle, Mishawaka, IN 46545. Funeral service will be Sunday February 25th at 2:00 pm at Granger Missionary with Pastor Jason Dickinson and Dr. Thomas Murphy presiding.
