Betty Jean Penny-Young, 80, of Osceola, passed away peacefully and went to the Heavenly Father, with her loving family surrounding her on May 14, 2011. She was born on April 29, 1931, in Tunnel Hill, GA, the daughter of Dennis and Lois Calhoun.
She is survived by her husband, Charles H. Young; daughters, Gloria Neff of Elkhart, Joy (Pat) Duff of Cassopolis, MI, Denise Parsons and one son, Mark (Kristi) Penny of Elkhart. She is also survived by grandchildren, Matthew (Gail) Neff, Joshua (Amanda) Neff, Dennis (Shelly) Haydon, Christi (Tom) Killilea, Ashley Nichole, Tawhni Stouder, Zachary Stouder and Aliyah Penny; great grandchildren, Davis, Savannah, Libby, Tommy, and Zeke; and great great grandchildren, Michael, Kennedy, Hank and Clare. Also surviving are two sisters, Mildred McArthur of Rocky Face, GA and Marylou Hamilton of Dalton, GA and many nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.
She is preceded in death by two daughters, Victoria Nan Parsons and Janice Darlene Parsons, a sister, Ginger Burdick, brother, Howard Calhoun, grandchild, Benjamin, great grandchild, Keith and her parents.
She grew up in Georgia and moved to Elkhart in 1952, where she raised her children and she lived her life, taking care of not only her kids, but many other children that called her "Mom". She was a natural born mother and loved taking care of others and loved animals, especially cats. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She also had a talent for growing plants and flowers, and raising beautiful vegetable gardens throughout the years. She loved to travel with her husband to Key West in their motor home; also, they loved the west, especially Laughlin, NV. The got married in Las Vegas in 1988. She was very involved with the Special Olympics when her daughter, Denise, was involved in the program. She worked for many years at the Elkhart YMCA and will be sorely missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm, on Saturday May 21, 2011 in Pleasant Valley Church of Christ, 10995 Edison Road, Osceola. Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Highway, Osceola is handling arrangements.
