Betty Jean Smith (Scheffler), 96, of Elkhart, Indiana, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2026.

Betty was born on November 14, 1929, in Mishawaka, Indiana, to Ivo and Cathryn Scheffler. She spent her entire life in the Mishawaka and Elkhart area, putting down roots that ran deep through her family, her home, and the traditions she held so dear.

Family was at the very heart of Betty’s life. She was one of six siblings, and the bond they shared remained strong throughout their lives. Some of her happiest memories were made together on weekend trips up north, mushroom hunting on her brother’s property, camping around the fire, and enjoying many memorable sing-alongs. They also shared camping trips to Florida and Texas, creating the kind of stories and laughter that would be remembered for years.

Early in her marriage to Walter Allen Smith of Elkhart, Betty and Walt made their forever home at 56092 Highland Ct. in Elkhart. It was more than just a house—it became a place where family gathered, memories were made, and generations grew closer. Together, Betty and Walt raised their two sons, Jack Lee Smith and Ronald Allen Smith.

Betty loved being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She doted on her grandchildren, Leah Smith (Jorge Vara), Heather Smith, Melissa Smith (Dylan Botting), and Andrew Smith (Hanna), as well as her 11 great-grandchildren JJ ,Jack ,Evelyn Zenin, LeeMichael, Felix, Evelyn, Olivia, Isabella, Aaron and Samuel along with numerous nieces and nephews. She cherished the time she spent with them and took great joy in watching her family grow.

One of the most special traditions Betty and Walt created was their annual Fourth of July celebration and family reunions. Their home would fill with family and friends, bringing together children, grandchildren, extended family, and friends across generations. There was always laughter, stories, good food, and the simple joy of being together. These gatherings became treasured memories that will remain in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to share them.

Coming from a large and close-knit family, Betty understood from an early age that family is something to treasure. She carried that belief with her throughout her entire life. She was a keeper of family traditions and memories, and in so many ways, she was one of the people who helped keep everyone connected. The love she had for her family was evident in the time she gave, the memories she helped create, and the home she always made welcoming to others.

Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Walter Allen Smith, her oldest son Jack Lee Smith, her siblings, Mary Ida Dutenhaver, Richard “Dick” Scheffler, Hazel Dene Studebaker, Virginia Engle, and Irene Roose, and her late parents.

While Betty’s passing leaves a tremendous emptiness for those who loved her, her life leaves behind something just as powerful—a lifetime of memories. Her family will remember the laughter around the campfire, the adventures shared with her siblings, the Fourth of July gatherings, the family reunions, and the countless moments spent together at the home she shared with Walt.

Most of all, Betty will be remembered for the love she gave so freely to her family. The traditions she cherished, the memories she helped create, and the love she poured into those around her will continue through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and all those whose lives she touched.

Betty’s family was her greatest treasure, and she was theirs.

She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever a part of the family she loved so dearly.

The family will be having a private celebration of life ceremony at a later date.
