Obituary

Captain Donald Paul Meyer, 89, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 9, 2014, with his family at his side. Donald was born on March 28, 1924 to Edward and Bertha (Torgler) Meyer in Dover, Ohio, where he accepted Christ as his personal Savior. He was very active in The Salvation Army in Gary, Indiana, where he met his future wife, Gloria May Spangle, and received his calling to become a Salvation Army Officer (minister). On August 17, 1946 he married Gloria in Gary, IN. He was a U.S. Navy World War II Veteran, and worked for several years at the Northern Illinois Gas Company. Donald led a life of simple faith and devotion to his Lord, to his wife of 64 years, and to his family and ministry. He excelled in music, playing the piano, organ, accordion and brass instruments, and he often sang with his wife and children. He shared his love for The Lord and music with many, including his children, all of whom have utilized music in ministry. He was known for his sense of humor, humility, and friendliness to all. He cared for the least, the last, and the lost. He often played the organ for the enjoyment of others, and was a lifelong Cubs fan. Together with his wife, he served in many Salvation Army appointments throughout the Midwest, retiring as a Captain from Shelbyville, IN in 1986. In retirement they supported several churches, and for the last ten years attended the Buchanan Church of the Nazarene with his daughter''s family, where he served as pianist. He is preceded in death by his wife, his parents, three brothers: Adrian, Robert and Dale, and his sister June Dado. He is survived by five children: Major Robert E. (Linda) Meyer of Hollister, MO, Donald L. (Kimberly) Meyer of Aurora, IL, Bruce A. (Linda) Meyer of Mesa, AZ, Major Timothy P. (Lori) Meyer of Chicago, IL, and Joy E. (Pastor Samuel) Scantlen of Galien, MI; sisters Margaret Elliot of Corning, AR and Grace Buncich of Crown Point, IN; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
