Obituary

With profound sadness and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Carl E. Fletcher, 96, who left us peacefully on March 2, 2025. Born on March 27, 1928, in Elkhart, Indiana, to Gordon F. "Whitey" and Mae (Robin) Fletcher, Carl's journey through life was one marked by joy, dedication, and an unyielding love for those closest to him. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, and his presence in the world will be deeply missed.

Carl's early years were shaped by a strong work ethic and a deep sense of family. He was always known for his bright personality, infectious laughter, and unwavering optimism. No matter the circumstances, Carl was always in a good mood, a trait that left a lasting impact on everyone he met. His genuine care and love for others made him a friend to all, and no one was ever a stranger to him. He had a way of making people feel comfortable, welcomed, and appreciated.

In his youth, Carl proudly served in the Army Air Force, an experience that left a lasting imprint on him. His love for his country and his fellow servicemen was deep, and he carried those values throughout his life. He was a man of integrity, and his commitment to service extended far beyond his military years.

Carl's greatest pride, however, was the love he shared with his family. On November 24th, 1949, he married the love of his life, Betty J. Freel. Their 75-year marriage was one for the ages, built on a foundation of love, mutual respect, and unwavering support for one another. Their bond was a testament to the enduring power of love and companionship, and Carl always spoke of Betty with admiration, respect, and gratitude. Together, they built a beautiful life, filled with shared memories, laughter, and unwavering devotion.

Carl was a proud father to four children: Vicki Rorie, Gary (Becky Maxwell) Fletcher, Kevin (Marsha) Fletcher, and Valerie (Ron) Williams. His children were his pride and joy, and he took great pleasure in watching them grow and thrive. He was equally proud of his 11 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, who filled his life with joy, pride, and a deep sense of fulfillment. Carl's legacy lives on in each of them, and his love for them will continue to inspire and guide them throughout their lives.

One of Carl's greatest passions was his career as a train engineer. He found deep satisfaction in the work, and his love for the railroad was evident in everything he did. His work ethic and dedication were unmatched, and he approached every shift with the same enthusiasm and commitment. Even after retiring in 1990, Carl's love for his job never diminished. In fact, he would often joke, "I wonder if they'll let me put in a few shifts." His devotion to his craft was a reflection of his larger-than-life personality—always willing to give more, always eager to stay involved.

Carl's zest for life was undeniable. He loved to go out, enjoy a good time, and spend time with friends. Whether it was barhopping or simply enjoying a good conversation, Carl was happiest when surrounded by those he loved. He had a way of making every moment feel special, and he had a rare ability to make everyone feel at ease. His many friends will remember him as a loyal companion, always ready with a kind word, a hearty laugh, or a helping hand.

Carl was a one-of-a-kind individual—his bright spirit, laughter, and love for life will remain with all who knew him. His legacy of kindness, love, and friendship will be cherished forever. Rest in peace, Carl. You were truly a blessing to all who had the honor of knowing you.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Gordon Fletcher, Bob Fletcher, Dorothy Simms, Madeline Warren, Ruth Backert, and his son-in-law Leon Rorie.

He is survived by his family: his beloved wife, Betty J. Fletcher; children Vicki Rorie, Gary (Becky Maxwell) Fletcher, Kevin (Marsha) Fletcher, and Valerie (Ron) Williams; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and countless friends whose lives were touched by his warmth, kindness, and infectious joy.
