Carl B. Martz, 89, of South Bend, died Sunday July 17, 2016. The South Bend native was born January 15, 1927 to Carl V. & Grace (Russell) Martz. Carl graduated from John Adams High School; he served his country in the US Coast Guard and on February 16, 1951 he married Ruth A. (Hertel) Martz in South Bend. Ruth preceded him in death on September 24, 2014 after 63 years of marriage. Carl worked as a mechanic for the South Bend Fire Dept for many years; he also worked as a HVAC tech/maintenance supervisor at Memorial Hospital of South Bend. Carl was retired and enjoyed the time spent with Ruth at their Scottsdale AZ home. They enjoyed travelling, particularly Europe and on cruises. A member of the American Legion Post #303, he also kept in touch with his military friends via the USS Savage Destroyer Escort Group meetings and outings in Arizona. In addition to his parents and his wife, Carl was also preceded in death by an infant daughter in 1964. Carl is survived by his son, John (Pamela) Martz of South Bend; his grandchildren, John (Kimberly) Martz, Jr. of New Carlisle and Jennifer (Ryan) Frey of Lafayette and his great-grandchildren, Mariella Martz & Mackenzie Frey. Memorial Service 11:00 Tuesday July 19, 2016 in Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Hwy, where friends may call one hour prior to services. Private interment in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
