Carmen L. Bateman, 81, of Granger, passed into God''s Kingdom peacefully on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at home with her family present. She was born in Auburn, Indiana on February 23, 1936 to Dee and Wilma (Weaver) Steininger. She was married to her college sweetheart, Edwin Bateman, who survives, for 58 wonderful years and three precious children were born to their union; two sons, Keith (Bev) Bateman of Irving, TX, Randall Bateman of Norman, OK and daughter, Dawn Bateman of Huntersville, NC. She enjoyed her grandchildren; Heather Bateman of Elkhart, IN, Paul Bateman of Huntersville, NC, Miranda (Corey) Dyer of Brownfield, TX, Jeff Hawkins of Pittsburg, KS and Stephanie (Sean) Henderson of Irving, TX. Carmen is also survived by her siblings; Marilyn (Loren) DeLong, Rita Jean (Norman) Schindler and James Steininger. Dawn often reminded her that she also had "grand-dogs", Spencer and Charlie. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her youngest sister, Ruthie Marvel. Carmen was a graduate of Leo High School, Leo, IN. She then went to Fort Wayne Bible College and later transferred to Olivet Nazarene University her sophomore year. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and also held a Master''s Degree from Ball State University. Carmen taught third grade at Mary Frank Harris School in the Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation for 32 years. Her church family was important in her life and she was very involved with her local church including the choir, missions council member, Sunday School teacher and as the financial recording secretary. She had a strong faith in God; she loved the church and her people. Her legacy is reflected in all of the small tasks that she did for her church. Funeral Services 1:00pm Saturday, November 25, 2017 at South Bend First Church of the Nazarene, 51690 N. Ironwood Rd., South Bend, IN 46635, where friends may call one hour prior to services. Calling also on Friday from 4-7pm in the church. Burial in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Arrangements through Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Hwy.
