Obituary

Carol Ann (Batdorf) Shearer was born in Elyria, Ohio on March 31, 1945 to Wilton and Reva Batdorf.

Carol passed away peacefully in her home in Osceola on April 19, 2025 after being in the care of Ascent Hospice Services.

In her life, Carol exhibited the traits of a "Woman of Noble Character" as depicted in the book of Proverbs. Proverbs describes this woman as being characterized by her wisdom, diligence, and faithfulness to her husband and family, embodying traits like hard work, generosity, and reverence for God.

Carol graduated from Taylor University in 1966 and was married to her husband Frederick H. (Rick) Shearer in August 1967 until his passing in 2023. Carol graduated to teach for 5 years while earning her master's degree from Indiana University South Bend.

Carol put her career of teaching on hold for 11 years to raise her two children. She prioritized her family and ensured a smooth-running household in order for her family to enjoy activities such as ice skating, cross country skiing, and roller skating as a family. Carol valued these times as a family and ensured that the mornings began with family devotions and that the family ate breakfast and dinner together.

Carol urged her two children to take up extracurricular activities, and she was always on the sidelines cheering, and would often be the loudest voice of the parents in the crowd. When her children were older, Carol was able to once again use her gift of teaching at Bittersweet Elementary School for 23 years as a teacher's aide.

Carol was a servant in her church community where she was an active member for over 50 years. She and her husband were small group leaders, she was involved in the music ministry, particularly the choir over the years, and she was active in various children's ministries throughout her entire life.

Carol continued to instill family values and carried this on to her grandchildren and their activities. She also maintained set times for weekly calls to her son, who lives in Washington State and she would travel out to see her son on a regular basis. Carol was a breast cancer survivor from the age of 52. God used her survival as a testimony and throughout the years she counseled others through difficult times. Carol often helped those who could not help themselves.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Wilton and Reva (Marlow) Batdorf, her beloved husband, Frederick H. Shearer, Jr., sweet daughter-in-law, Laura Opre-Shearer, and sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Dick Broege.

She is survived by her son, Brian F. Shearer, daughter Kathryn M. (Shawn) Holtgren, and her grandchildren Autumn L. Holtgren, Nathan S. Holtgren, and Victoria A. Holtgren.
