Charlie F. Whitfield, 91, of Granger, passed away at 5:10 pm, Saturday, September 3, 2011 in his home, surrounded by family. Charlie was born on December 11, 1919 in Depoy, KY, the son of the late Leonard and Addie (Hanks) Whitfield. On May 17, 1946 in Mishawaka, he married Margurite Ahls.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Margurite, two daughters, Gail Horein of South Bend and Kelly Birk of Granger, four grandchildren, Annie Horein of Indianapolis, Brett Horein of South Bend, Ryan (Margo) Birk of Indianapolis, and Lisa Birk of Granger and one great granddaughter, Malayna Horein of South Bend. He is also survived by a sister, Joyce (Charles) DeLaurelle of Mishawaka and a brother, Hubert Whitfield of Mishawaka and his dog, Missy and cat, Highway. He is preceded in death by his parents, son in law, Bob Birk, and three brothers, Price, Wilford and Delbert Whitfield and a sister, Mary Williams
Charlie proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was member of Company A, 835th Engineer Battalion and was honorably discharged in 1945. While a teenager, he was part of the CCC (civilian conservation corps). He retired from Wheel-a-Brator Frye, but also worked at Uni-Royal and Studebaker. Charlie also was a St. Joseph County Sheriff Deputy.
Visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00 pm, Wednesday, September 7, 2011 in Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Highway, Osceola. Military Graveside Honors will be held at 3:00 pm, Thursday, September 8, 2011 in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, where burial will take place.
