Darvin Scutchfield Jr. (Scutch), beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, 83, of Mishawaka, went home to be with the Lord Jesus Christ April 3, 2015. Darvin was born in Prestonsburg, Kentucky on May 15, 1931 to Darvin and Rebecca (Haywood) Scutchfield. Both have preceded him in death. On December 16, 1951, in Bowman Bottom, KY, he married Priscilla Tackett (deceased 2002). They were married 51 years. Left behind to cherish his memory are his sons: Ralph (Bridget) Scutchfield of Plymouth, IN, Kenneth "Jeffrey" (Donna) Scutchfield of South Port, FL, daughters: Shirley (Kenneth) Coffman of Mishawaka, IN, Patty (Jack) McCann of Mishawaka, IN, Seven grandsons and 14 great-grandchildren. He also found a lady-friend, Wanda Mitchell, whom he met at a Bluegrass festival. They shared a bond through the music and many other endeavors.
Darvin was best known for his love of Bluegrass music. He played upright-bass in a Bluegrass band named "The Family Tradition," and indeed it became a family tradition. Both sons play music and two grandsons, Brock Scutchfield of South Bend, IN and Matt Scutchfield of Boston, MA are involved in playing music. He has four great-granddaughters currently learning how to play musical instruments. Darvin attended many Bluegrass festivals throughout Indiana and shared many stories. He was a member of the Northern Indiana Bluegrass Association. He was a beekeeper and many people enjoyed the honey he harvested. He raised a garden every year and enjoyed having the first ripe tomato of the neighborhood. Earlier in his life, he loved going bird hunting and kept bird dogs. He made several trips to Nebraska and Texas with good friends to go hunting. He also had Rottweiler''s, Dobermans, Finnish Spitz, Jack Russell Terriers. Dogs were a prevailing theme in his life. He became interested in basket making and learned that craft. In addition, Darvin was an avid pool player and won several championships (1978 and 1979) while playing in the Midwest Pool league. He was ever learning and loved life.
Darvin was a Union Sheet Metal worker, local 170, and retired from Ideal Consolidated in 1993.
Services will be held at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola, Indiana 10776 McKinley Highway Osceola, IN 46561 Viewing will be Tuesday, April 7, 2015 from 6 PM - 8 PM. The funeral will be held there at 10 AM, Wednesday, April 8, 2015 with Pastor Vito Rulli (Lakeside Baptist Church, Lakeville,Indiana) officiating. Interment will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola, Indiana.
His family would like to thank everyone for their prayers and love given to us during this very difficult time. A very special "Thank you" to all the wonderful people at Center for Hospice Care. Bonnie, you were a tremendous blessing and comfort to our family.
A last piece of wisdom from "Pops" as he was so fondly called, "If you want to double your money, fold it in half and put it back in your pocket."
