Obituary

Dominico Schimizzi, 88, of Osceola, died Saturday February 9, 2013. The Knoxville IA native was born May 15, 1924 to Natale and Teresa (Gareffa) Schimizzi. In 1942, Don was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corps. in the 319 Airborne in B-26 bombers. He served in the Mediterranean Theater as a Technical Sergeant; was a tail gunner completing 64 missions, surviving a mid-air collision on a mission in 1945. On June 30, 1945, Don married Mary Portolese at St. Monica''s Church in Mishawaka. He worked 41 years for Indiana Michigan Electric Company (American Electric Power) as a certified welder retiring in 1985. Don also enjoyed baseball, watching football, and playing golf. He also volunteered during football season working at the Notre Dame press box for over twenty years. Don belonged to the VFW, and the Mishawaka High School Alumni Association. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Schimizzi; his daughters, Maureen Schimizzi and Jackie (Rick Ehlert) Schimizzi Ehlert, both of Chicago. Grandsons, Michael Joseph Ehlert and Richard Domenico Ehlert, also of Chicago and his brother, Frank Schimizzi of Mishawaka. Don has six brothers-in-law whom he considered his brothers; Ross (Mary) Portolese, Pat (Dorothy) Portolese, Mike (Rosalie) Portolese, Umbert (Mary) Portolese, Tony "Doc" Portolese, and Joe (Beth Ann) Portolese. Don has many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Don''s family wants to thank their loving neighbor Karen Hudson; Mike and Lisa Portolese and the Center for Hospice Care for all of their help and assistance. Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 4508 Vistula Road, Mishawaka where friends may call one hour prior to Mass. Calling also Tuesday 4-8pm at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Hwy, with the Rosary recited at 5:00pm. Burial in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens with military honors. The family''s preferred memorials are Queen of Peace Parish or the Center for Hospice Care.
