Obituary

Donald F. Kania, 95, of Middlebury, Indiana, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving family, following a brief illness.

Donald was born on June 1, 1930, in Hammond, Indiana, to the late Frank and Lillian (Miller) Kania. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia Ann (Smith) Kania.

Donald met the love of his life, Patricia Ann Smith, and they were united in marriage on November 22, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois. Together, they shared many devoted years of marriage and built a strong and loving family.

A man of faith, Donald was a follower of the Catholic tradition. After graduating from high school in 1951, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he proudly served as a paratrooper for two years. Following his military service, he dedicated much of his career to construction, working as a skilled cement mason.

Donald found great joy in the outdoors and in creative pursuits. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as painting and carving wood. He will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, his creativity, and his deep love for his family.

He is survived by his children: James Kania; Cathy (Dave) Edwards; Theresa (Jeff) Schaut; Maria Hardy; and Scott Kania; as well as 13 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and numerous great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Eugene Kania, and two nieces.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the home of Donald Kania. U.S. Army military honors will be rendered at that time.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Chapel Hill Funeral Home, Osceola, Indiana.
