Doris J. (Peeks) Miller, 82, of Mishawaka, Indiana, passed away on September 10, 2013 at Elkhart General Hospital, surrounded by her family.
Doris was born in Chappell, Nebraska to Arnold and Hattie (Kupka) Peeks. She was baptized on April 12, 1931, and confirmed on May 20, 1945, at Zion Lutheran Church (where she was later married, in 1953). Doris was a lifelong Lutheran, and a charter member of Hilltop Lutheran Church, South Bend, Indiana, for 52 years. She was active in many areas of the church, including Sunday School teacher, Superintendent of Sunday Schools, and Elder. Doris was a member of many committees, and she received the "Hilltop Rock" award twice.
Doris attended Deuel County High School, University of Nebraska, and Valparaiso University. She taught school for much of her career, starting in a one-room school in Nebraska District 32 where her students included her youngest sister, Veronica. She then went to Valparaiso University, and after that she taught in a Christian Day School in Detroit. Later in her career, she was a salesperson for World Book Encyclopedia; a therapy aide (retired) at OSMC in Elkhart; and on the board of St. Joseph County Farm Bureau, most recently working on a favored project called "Ag in the Classroom." She loved nature, farming, gardening, and cooking.
Doris is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 60 years, Dale G. Miller; her children, Kathleen Miller, Lexington, KY, David Miller, Chalmers, IN, Douglas (Carol) Miller, Wayne, PA, Daniel (Diane) Miller, Palmhurst, TX, and Kristine (Paul) Swoveland, Lexington, KY. Also surviving are her beloved grandchildren, Kara (John) Rupcich, Ben (Joanna) Miller, Molly Miller; Brendan Miller, Ethan Miller, Dakota Miller, Cheyenne Miller, Robin Swoveland, and Dora Swoveland. In addition, surviving are her siblings Pam (Lewis) Reinemann, Duluth, MN, Ted (Virginia) Peeks, Chappell, NE, and Veronica (Bob) Fearneyhough, Cheyenne, WY, and eleven dear nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents.
