Mishawaka – Dorthy Bell James, 91, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on July 21, 2026, with her loving family by her side at the Center for Hospice Care, Raclin House.
Dorthy was born on September 24, 1934, in Haynes, Arkansas, to the late B.F. and Clara Bell (Stevens) Presley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Shirley Williamson; and her brothers, James Presley, Sonny Presley, Bob Presley, and Billy Presley.
Dorthy met the love of her life, Leroy James, in Arkansas, and the two were united in marriage on June 19, 1954, in Dell, Arkansas. Together they shared 72 wonderful years of marriage, building a life centered on faith, family, and love.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Leroy James; her five children, Donna (Tim) Steele, Barbara (Gideon) Allen, Lester (Debbie) James, Deborah (Bud) Buck, and Leroy Jr. (Wanda) James; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; her sister Deloris (Kenny) Woodard; her brother-in-law, Walter "Uncle Duck" Williamson; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Dorthy was a longtime and faithful member of Twin City Baptist Church in Mishawaka. Her Christian faith was the foundation of her life, and she found great joy in reading her Bible daily as well as enjoying many other books. She lovingly dedicated herself to raising her five children and creating a warm, welcoming home for her family. Dorthy was an excellent cook who delighted in preparing meals for those she loved. She took great pride in keeping her home, enjoyed tending her flower and vegetable gardens, and treasured every moment spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In her quiet moments, she enjoyed completing word searches and playing games on her iPad.
Family and friends are invited to gather on Monday, July 27, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Twin City Baptist Church, 420 E. Jefferson Blvd., Mishawaka, IN 46545.
Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, in the Garden of Nativity, Osceola, Indiana.
Memorial contributions may be made to Twin City Baptist Church.
Dorthy will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her servant's heart, and the deep love she shared with her family. Her legacy of kindness, devotion, and trust in the Lord will continue to live on in the lives of all who knew and loved her.
