Obituary

Edna June (Schrock) Berkshire of Elkhart, born June 8, 1921, at home in Jones, Michigan, to Norva and Ira Schrock, passed away on May 20, 2025. She was 103.

June loved her life growing up on a farm, helping with the animals and getting into mischief with her brother and sisters. She went to a one room schoolhouse, Chapel Hill; the teacher would sometimes live with her family. After Chapel Hill, June attended and graduated from Bristol High School in 1939 where she first met her future husband, Bob. They attended high school reunions for decades afterward and held their 50th wedding anniversary in the gymnasium where Bob had played basketball.

After high school, June attended Epworth Nurses' Training at Memorial Hospital and received a registered nurse degree. Upon graduating she enlisted in the Navy as a nurse. She was stationed at Mare Island on the west coast and served during WW2 on the ship, Omar Bundy, in the Philippines. She cared for soldiers that were wounded in the Pacific and frequently worked on the amputee ward. After discharge, she returned to the midwest and worked with polio patients in Minnesota, but kept in touch with family and friends in Michigan. June and Bob corresponded and would meet in Chicago, eventually marrying and moving to an apartment near Wrigley field where their first daughter, Patricia, was born.

They moved to Elkhart Indiana where their family grew to 5 children. In addition to Patricia came Deb, Judy, Ted and Joanne. Later, Colleen joined the family after losing her family. June attended numerous PTA meetings, dance recitals, band and orchestra concerts that her children required. She worked at Elkhart General Hospital starting as a floor nurse, then house supervisor, pharmacy nurse and starting the inservice education department. In that capacity she served the community by being a pioneer in EMT and paramedic training. She also taught hospital staff and community groups CPR. During that time June was active in American Heart Association,

After retiring from EGH June took up golf and often played with her husband and leagues in Elkhart and when wintering in Florida. Bob and June migrated from Elkhart to Tavares, Florida in the winter and enjoyed golfing and socializing. Deb and Denny eventually moved to Tavares as well. Following Bob's death from lung cancer in 2005, June continued to be active in Central Christian Church in Elkhart and in Tavares. She hosted fundraising fashion shows and quilting events, including an annual quilters' tea.

June's older sister, Mae, moved in after celebrating June's 92nd birthday, They continued to winter in Florida and summer in Elkhart. They watched baseball and golf on TV and worked on jigsaw puzzles and enjoyed sitting on the porch swing with a beer.

After Mae's death, June lived at home until her 100th birthday and then moved into Miller's Merry Manor assisted living facility in Wakarusa. She suffered a fall resulting in a broken hip. The doctors at EGH had never operated on someone 102 years old, but repaired her fracture and she recovered. She was discharged to Miller's rehab facility, but never returned to her former self. Caring Cove Hospice stepped in and she was moved to Embracecare group home where she was welcomed and lovingly cared for by Leah and her staff,
