IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Edward Farrell
Evans
May 5, 1927 – July 24, 2024
Edward Farrell Evans known as Farrell, Ed, Eddie, and Pa to friends and family, passed away at the age of 97. He moved into Majestic Care of Goshen on May 20. He died of natural causes on July 24, 2024 at Majestic Care in Goshen. We are grateful to the Veteran's Administration, Majestic Care of Goshen, and Center for Hospice.
Ed was born on May 5, 1927 in South Bend to Lavina Jeffries Evans and Frank Evans. He grew up on Franklin Street in South Bend with his parents and eleven siblings. He and his brothers played a lot of baseball at Lippincott Park near their home.
Ed married Dola Mae Carriger Evans on August 10, 1950. He retired from Yellow Freight Lines in August, 1988.
A proud veteran, Ed served his country in the United States Navy on board the U.S.S. Sargeant Bay during World War II.
In 1952, Ed and Dola bought a home on Riverview Drive in Osceola. Ed lived there until recently.
Ed was an avid bowler and golfer achieving a perfect score of 300 in bowling and a hole-in-one in golf after the age of 70. Always an athlete, Ed played on several softball leagues, and coached Little League in Osceola. Ed walked 5 miles a day until recent years. In addition to athletics, Ed was a candy-maker specializing in peanut brittle. He made hundreds of batches over the years, sharing them with friends, family, and customers on his Yellow Freight Line delivery route.
Ed and Dola started their family in their home in Osceola. In September, 1954, Dola became ill. It was polio. Their lives changed drastically that day. Though Dola would never walk again, they raised their family, hosted Holiday meals, visited with family and friends, and traveled much of the country including Hawaii. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and missed their 51st by one month.
Ed is survived by his daughter, Debra Evans Osza (Dave) of Elkhart, his grandchildren, Julie Evans of Mishawaka and Jason Evans (Katrina) of Mishawaka. His great-grandchildren, Ryan Evans, Noah Hurlbut, Jason, II; Christopher, and Rebeccah Evans of Mishawaka. His great-great grandchildren, Aubrie Streeter of Bristol, Elijah Runnels of Mishawaka, and Wynter and Oliver Evans of Mishawaka.
