South Bend – Eldon Russell Knepp, 94, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2026, at Creekside Village in Granger, surrounded by his loving family.

Eldon was born on September 24, 1931, in Lakeville, Indiana, to the late Russell and Mary Elizabeth (Smith) Knepp. He graduated from Lakeville High School with the Class of 1950 before proudly serving his country in the United States Army from August 1952 until February 1958, attaining the rank of Specialist Fifth Class (SP5).

On August 12, 1956, Eldon married the love of his life, Bernice Caroline Schultz. Together they shared 62 wonderful years of marriage before Bernice's passing. He was also preceded in death by his brother, John (Mary) Knepp.

Eldon leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory: his daughters, Karen (Bill) Rose and Beth (Scott) Schmitt; five grandchildren, James E. (Jodi) Rose, Mark (Stacy) Schmitt, Noelle (Arick) Cannon, Justin Schmitt, and Bradin Schmitt; nine great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

A devoted man of faith, Eldon was a longtime member of Emmaus Lutheran Church in South Bend, where he faithfully served as an elder. His quiet leadership, unwavering faith, and caring spirit touched many lives within his church family.

Eldon spent much of his career as a grocery store manager for A&P and later Lincolnway Foods. He was known for his strong work ethic, friendly smile, and the countless stories he loved to share from his years serving customers and coworkers alike.

Above all, Eldon treasured time with his family. He found joy tending his garden, western-style square dancing, gathering with friends for euchre, and playing penny poker with his son-in-law, Bill. Whether sharing a story, a laugh, or a card game, he had a gift for making others feel welcome and leaving them with a smile.

Family and friends are invited to gather on Monday, August 3, 2026, at Emmaus Lutheran Church, 929 Milton Street, South Bend, Indiana 46613. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m., with the funeral service celebrating Eldon's life beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Eldon will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Bernice, at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Veterans Garden, in Osceola, Indiana. In recognition of his faithful military service, Army funeral honors will be conducted by the United States Army Honor Guard, with additional honors provided by VFW Post #360.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Emmaus Lutheran Church, 929 Milton Street, South Bend, IN 46613.

Eldon's legacy of faith, love, service, and devotion to family will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.
