Obituary

Eleanor Roberta Smith, 97, a resident at Hubbard Hill Retirement Community, passed away at 11:30 a.m., May 22, 2014, at Hubbard Hill after an extended period of declining health.

She was born on November 22, 1916, to Robert Edward and Fern Estelle (Diley) Lee, in Lagrange County, Indiana and was a life-long resident of Elkhart and Lagrange Counties.

She graduated from Scott High School in Scott, Indiana in 1934 and from Manchester College in North Manchester, Indiana in 1938, earning a degree in Music and Art. After college, she taught secondary school, including all twelve grades, for several years at several locations throughout northern Indiana, and she continued to play and teach the piano into her later years.

She married Clyde Edward Smith, of Elkhart, a Navy Lieutenant, in February, 1943, and they were happily married for 52 years, until his death in March, 1995.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clyde; her brother, Robert E. Lee, Jr., of Lagrange County; her brother-in-law and wife, James and Pauline Smith, of Elkhart; an infant grandson; and two infant brothers.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Robert''s wife, Martha Lou Lee (Bassett), of Lagrange County and three sons and their wives and children; Clyde Edward Smith, Jr. (Carol Ann Hornsby) of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Robert Lee Smith (Barbara Ellen Mooney) of Elkhart; and Frederick Lyle Smith (Barbara Kay McCune) of Elkhart; six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 2:00-3:00 pm, Saturday, May 24, 2014 in Central Christian Church, 418 W. Franklin St., Elkhart. Funeral Services will follow at 3:00 pm in the church with burial to follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. Rev. John Hart will officiate.
