Elizabeth A.
Emerson
Aug 16, 1918 — Jun 17, 2018
Elizabeth "Betty" Emerson, 99, passed away on Sunday June 17, 2018, at Miller's Merry Manor, Wakarusa. She was formerly of South Bend where she lived for most of her life. Betty was born August 16, 1918 in Chicago, as the oldest child of the late George and Katherine (Byrne) Sherlock. Her parents were immigrants from Ireland at the turn of the century and Betty was very proud of her Irish Catholic heritage. Betty was a member of Holy Cross and St. Jude Catholic Churches over the years. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who cherished and cared for her family. Her main hobby and relaxation was tending to her flower gardens, specifically geraniums and marigolds. At an early age her family moved to northern Wisconsin and resided in the small farm community of Hauer, near Hayward, WI. There she and her three siblings, Kathleen (Kieradlo), George Sherlock, and Margaret (Shanahan) attended a one-room grade school house. Betty went on to graduate from high school in nearby Birchwood, WI. During and after high school, Betty worked at resort lodges in the Northwood's area, where she met her future husband Clayton "Bud" Emerson. On Valentine's Day 1942, they married at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Chicago. Bud soon left for the army to serve in the Infantry in Europe during WWII. Upon his safe return home after the war, they moved from Chicago to South Bend and raised their family of four children. Betty and Bud were married 53 years, and he preceded her in death in 1995. Betty was also preceded in death by her parents, sisters, brother, son-in-law Ed Jordan and most recently by daughter Linda K. DeLaruelle on October 14, 2017. Surviving Betty are her remaining three children, Alice (Ron) Whitesel of South Bend, JoAnn Jordan of Mishawaka and Robert (Nona) Emerson of Osceola; seven grandchildren, David Whitesel of South Bend, Carrie (Jon Mikel) Jordan of Elkhart, Dean (Michelle) Whitesel of Howell MI, Dana (Mike) Grant of South Bend, Brent DeLaruelle of Elkhart, Dr. Scott Emerson of Asheville NC, and Amy DeLaruelle of Osceola; eleven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, along with several nieces and nephews. Per Mom's wishes there will be no funeral home visitation and cremation has taken place. Please join us for the Mass of Christian Resurrection at 10:30 Monday, July 2, 2018 in Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 4508 Vistula Rd., Mishawaka, IN. The family will receive friends on Monday from 9:30 -10:30 in the church. Interment will take place in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are being handled through Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Hwy. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. The family would like to thank the staffs at both Hubbard Hill in Elkhart and Miller's Merry Manor in Wakarusa, as well as Dr Jason Marker, Dr Jeffrey Eck, and Optum Nursing. We especially want to thank all the nurses and aides in Country Manor pod at Miller's for their loving care, compassion, and respect.
