Obituary

Elizabeth R. "Betty" Suter , 94, of South Bend, died at home from heart failure on Friday, June 19 at 8:06 p.m.  The three months of quarantine forced her to slow down, giving up all her social activities, and that gave her bad heart a chance to catch up with her. Elizabeth was born August 6, 1925, in Columbia, MO, to Joseph and Marie (Knapp) Wuellner. She graduated from St. John's School of Nursing in 1946 and worked as a Public Health Nurse until marriage.  On June 16, 1951, in Urbana, IL, she wed Frank J. Suter and they moved to South Bend. Betty is survived by eight daughters and four sons: Martha of South Bend, Mary of Fayetteville, AR, Jean Suter Hill of Riverside, CA, Nancy of Roseville, MN, Barbara (Ron) O'Lena of Soldotna, AK, Margaret of South Bend, Suzanne (Eric) Suter-Lowe of Pasadena, MD, James (Nia) of Biloxi, MS, Robert (Lisa) of South Bend, Richard (Elizabeth Kelsey) of Leawood, KS, Jennifer (Jim) Scott of Ft. Collins, CO, and David (Meredith) of South Bend; 18 grandchildren: Allison Hill, Carlos & Tony Bossard, Gabriel (Megan), Jacob, Nate & Joshua O'Lena, Alex (Carly) & Max Suterlowe, Courtney (Ray) Kipp and Kyle Suter, Riley & Ryan Suter, Scott, Emma Kate & Henry Suter, Rachel Scott and Zachary Suter; great-grandsons Kilian & Francis O'Lena and Wallace Suterlowe. She was preceded in death by her parents and five brothers; Frank on December 29, 2006; daughters, Joanne in 1965, Dorothy in 2016 and granddaughter, Rosemarie O'Lena in 2016.  Betty Suter lived a life of quiet faithful service to her family, her Church, her friends and the community. She raised her own 13, and in the early 1970s, opened a day care center in her home, and thus contributed to the upbringing of countless other children over a period of almost 20 years. She was a member of Christ the King Parish for 69 years and was involved in many different ministries, including Altar and Rosary Society, teaching Sunday school, child care for Bible Study, cleaning the altar, funeral lunches, collection counting, managing the parish prayer line and making sack lunches for the Center for the Homeless. When too many regulations convinced her that it was time to retire from the daycare business, she started delivering Meals on Wheels, at first with Frank, then by herself. She was the recipient of the Real Services Older Hoosier of the Year award in 2001 and in 2009 for her service to her clients. Her social outlets in recent years were the widows and widowers group at church and her beloved bridge clubs. It was to be her turn to host the next bridge get-together whenever it was safe to get together again. Her other interests included family camping trips in a renovated school bus, and after retirement, train trips with her daughter Mary, gardening and house plants, reading, playing euchre in addition to bridge, knitting & crocheting, sewing, cross-stitch and embroidery. She made hundreds of afghans over the years and gave every one of them away. In later years, despite being blind in one eye, she took up embroidery, making quilt squares for her daughter Barbara to make into quilts. But her greatest accomplishment was her family and she loved having them all together. She died the way she lived; quietly and with little drama. She summed up her own life by saying "I just feel like I should be doing something in return for all that God has given me." The family would like to thank all her doctors and the staff at the Center for Hospice Care. The Mass of Christian Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00 Friday, August 7, 2020 in Christ the King Catholic Church, 52473 SR933, followed by a luncheon in the family home to celebrate her life . Arrangements through Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Hwy. Private entombment was made in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family's preferred memorials are Christ the King Catholic Church, 52473 SR933, South Bend, IN 46637 or The Center for Hospice Care, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
