Obituary

Ferdinand Howard Kretsch, 98, passed away peacefully at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne after a brief illness, with his loving family by his side. Until recently, he had been a resident of Twyckenham Hills in South Bend, Indiana.

Ferdinand was born on November 8, 1927, in Davenport, Iowa, to the late Howard Joseph and Minnie (Haak) Kretsch. He was also preceded in death by his grandson, Jeremy Kretsch, and his brothers, Donald Lee Kretsch and Kent Erwin Johnson.

At just 17 years old, Ferdinand answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He trained as an airplane tail gunner in a torpedo bomber and as an aircraft mechanic. His service reflected the courage, dedication, and quiet patriotism that defined his life.

Ferdinand met the love of his life, Betty Carol Tadlock, and they were united in marriage on October 7, 1951, in Davenport, Iowa. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and unwavering devotion. This past October, they celebrated 75 wonderful years of marriage — a testament to their enduring love and commitment.

A man of many interests, Ferdinand was especially passionate about competitive shooting. He enjoyed participating in pistol and rifle competitions and took great pride in preparing for each event, often spending hours carefully loading bullets in anticipation of the next match. His precision, patience, and enthusiasm for the sport were well known among fellow competitors and friends.

Above all, Ferdinand was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Carrol Kretsch; his sons, Dennis (Debbie) Kretsch and Howard (Connie) Kretsch; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and associates who will cherish his memory.

Family and friends will be received on Thursday, March 5, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Osceola, Indiana, with the funeral service beginning at 12:00 noon. U.S. Navy military honors will be rendered with the assistance of VFW Post 360. Internment will immediately follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola.

Ferdinand will be remembered for his steadfast love of family, his proud military service, his disciplined spirit, and the quiet strength that carried him through nearly a century of life well lived.
