Flora Belle Quimby, age 91, of South Bend, passed away August 25, 2009 at Cardinal Nursing Home. Flora Belle was born December 22, 1917 in Brownstown, Indiana to the late Daryl and Mary (George) Carter. On May 12, 1934, she was united in marriage to the late Lester E. Quimby. They were married 72 years prior to his passing in 2006.
Surviving are her sons, Donald (Beverly) Quimby of Granger, and Barry (Janet) Quimby of Osceola, along with 7 grandchildren; Steven (Susan) Quimby, Michael (Melissa) Quimby, Susan Kertes, Jeffery Quimby, Abigail Basham, Belinda Quimby, an dCamilla (Blaine) Shaw. Also surviving are 5 great grandchildren; Lauren and Kristen Quimby, Matthew and Paige Kertes, and William Shaw. Preceding her in death was her son, Tommy Lee Quimby in 1972, and her 5 siblings, Hovis, Harley and Cecil Carter, Dorothy Quaroni and Ruby Fisher.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 pm Friday, August 28, 2009 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Osceola, Indiana. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Saturday, August 29, 2009 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home and interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
Flora Belle and her husband ran a Bait Shop on Eddy and Cedar Streets in South Bend for many years. She was also employed by Baycoat Plating for several years until her retirement in 1974. Flora Belle enjoyed playing BINGO, bowling, and playing cards at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge # 435, working puzzle books, and cooking. She had a tremendous love of music. As a young lady, she played the piano and sang for the Civilian Conservation Corps, which was where she met her husband Lester. Flora Belle continued her love for music throughout her lifetime, and enjoyed watching the Lawrence Welk Orchestra on television.
