Francis Edward Schmidt, 94, of South Bend, died on Tuesday, October 9, 2018.  He was born on January 5, 1924 in Mishawaka, Indiana to Jacob Henry and Catherine (Abberger) Schmidt.  After graduating from Mishawaka High School in 1942, he went on to serve his country honorably in the Army Air Corp in World War II with the 314 Bomb Wing in the South Pacific.  On June 14, 1947, Francis married Mary K. Cushing.  She preceded him in death on March 16, 2012.  He was a member of Little Flower Catholic Church and enjoyed fishing, gardening, eating out, and listening to music.  Francis was a member of VFW 360, American Legion 161, Moose Lodge 433, and Elks Lodge 1719.  He is survived by his son, James (Julie) Schmidt of South Bend; and grandson James Schmidt.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of 64 years, Mary; and three brothers, Jacob, Ray, and John Schmidt.  Friends and family will be received on Friday, October 12, 2018 from 11-12 in the Little Flower Catholic Church, 54191 N Ironwood Rd, South Bend, IN 46635 with the Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 12 Noon.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 130 Red Coach Dr, Mishawaka, IN 46545, American Heart Association, 6500 Technology Center Dr #100 46278, Zionsville, IN 46077, or to the Alzheimer's Association, 50 E 91st St #100, Indianapolis, IN 46240.
