Fred R. Fershin, 96, of New Carlisle, Indiana died Monday February 3, 2014 at Memorial Hospital of South Bend. Fred was born in Elkhart on May 27, 1917 to Gasper & Victoria (Barilich) Fershin and was a lifetime area resident. An honored US Army Veteran of WWII, whose decorations included the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Presidential Unit Emblem, WWII Victory Medal and others. He married Matilda Merlo on May 17, 1941. Fred retired in 1981 from management of dry cleaning businesses. A member of St. Monica Catholic Church, he was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and an avid golfer, having won a League Championship at Eberhart Golf Course at 90 years of age. Fred was also a talented woodcarver and an avid gardener. He was preceded in death by siblings; Steve, John, Frank, Frances and Betty. (Fred''s son, Robert Fershin of Las Vegas NV has also died, having passed later on the same day as his father, Monday February 3, 2014) Fred''s survivors include his beloved wife of 72 years, Matilda Fershin; his children, Diane Williams of South Bend, James (Pamela) Fershin of Granger, Kenneth (Pamela Calvano) Fershin of St. Joseph MI, Joi (John) Beck of Midlothian VA; 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Resurrection 10:30 am Tuesday, February 11, 2014 in the Chapel at Hamilton Grove, 31869 Chicago Trail, New Carlisle. Friends may call at Hamilton Grove, one hour prior to Mass.
