February 20, 1935 – January 16, 2025
South Bend - George H. Smith Jr., age 89, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away on January 16, 2025, following a brief illness at the Center for Hospice in Mishawaka, Indiana. He was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to the late George H. and Reba (Webb) Smith. He was also preceded in death by a son Michael Smith on April 17, 2024.
He graduated from Mannheim Township High School in Lancaster, PA and attended Franklin Marshall College Lancaster PA.
George was preceded in death by his first wife, Rosalie (Beachy) Smith 1957 -1991, and his second wife, Janet Alice (Merchant) Smith 1991-2018. In 2021, he was united in love with Anna Marie Matthews, who remained by his side as his devoted partner.
A proud veteran, George served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Korean War. He worked at various banks in the Michiana area. He will be remembered for his kind heart, his love of family, and his passion for woodworking. George found joy in creating beautiful, handcrafted birdhouses, and in tending to his yard. His hands were always busy making something special, whether for the enjoyment of nature or to share with those he loved.
George is survived by his loving children, Mark (Patti) Smith of South Bend and Linda (Jonathan) Ponader of Ft. Myers, FL, as well as 6 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, who brought him immense joy. His family was the center of his world, and his legacy of quiet dignity, generosity, and warmth will continue through them.
There will be no formal services in accordance with George's wishes. A private interment will take place at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in South Bend, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Center for Hospice in Mishawaka, a place that provided George with exceptional care in his final days.
George will be remembered fondly and missed deeply by his family, friends, and all who were touched by his generous spirit and quiet strength.
