Gerl G. "John"  Silveus Jr. was born September 10, 1933, Mishawaka, Indiana. Gerl passed away on February 21, 2023, following multiple illnesses. He was the son of Gerl Glen, Sr. and Wilma Josephine Zorn Silveus, the oldest of a family of four boys and two girls. At the age of two, his family moved to Osceola, where he spent most of his life and worked at numerous local businesses. He attended Osceola Grade School and graduated from Mishawaka High School, Class of 1952. Gerl married Lois Marilyn Scherer on May 23, 1954, at First English Lutheran Church, Mishawaka, Indiana. Gerl and Lois lived in El Paso, Texas where he served active duty in the U.S. Army, Fort Bliss from 1955-1957 followed by four more years in Army Reserve and National Guard units. Gerl and Lois moved briefly to Flint, Michigan where he worked at a Fisher Body Plant. Since then he has made his home in Osceola, Indiana. Gerl was employed by Ball Band/Uniroyal for over 33 years. After his retirement, he worked four years as a security guard for a local security company before entering full retirement. In his spare time, he thoroughly enjoyed his vegetable and flower gardening along with hunting during every possible season. For over twenty seven years, he and Lois owned hunting property in the upper peninsula of Michigan. Gerl also loved to mushroom hunt, be outdoors and enjoy nature. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his large extended family.

He is survived by his two siblings, Tom (Elaine) Silveus of Knox, Indiana, and Lydia (Steve) Rienks of Naperville, Illinois. Also surviving are his six children, Marilyn Silveus Nash of Osceola, Indiana, Marsha (Mike) Vinson of Mishawaka, Indiana, Marla (Steve) Foster of Edwardsburg, Michigan, Kurt (Shelley) Silveus, Andrew (Jodi) Silveus both of Osceola, Indiana and Melissa (Gerry) McGowan of Strathaven, Scotland. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. Gerl was proceeded in death by his parents, his wife, Lois (February 17, 2013), his brothers, William E. Silveus and L. Scott Silveus and his sister, Rita M. Strand. Visitation will be held on Tuesday February 28, 2023 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Highway, Osceola, Indiana from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. His funeral service will be held at First English Lutheran Church, 16495 Ireland Road, Mishawaka, Indiana Wednesday March 1, 2023 with a one hour visitation prior to the memorial service. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 am. Graveside burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola Indiana.
