Harold "Hal" Earnest Joy's Obituary

Harold “Hal” Earnest Joy, 76, of Osceola, Indiana, peacefully passed away on March 1, 2026.

Born November 3, 1949, in South Bend, Indiana, Hal was the second of four sons born to Earnest Joy and Anna Joy (Kleitz). He grew up and lived for many years in his hometown of Granger. Hal graduated from Penn High School in 1968 and earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Tri-State University in 1972, followed by a Master of Business Administration from Indiana University South Bend in 1981.

Hal dedicated more than 35 years to the heavy highway construction industry, working as an estimator and supervisory manager for several leading local companies. He was known for his strong leadership, commitment to excellence, attention to detail, and enthusiastic work ethic. His passion for the industry inspired both his sons, daughters-in-law, and even his grandson, Bailey, and granddaughter, Shelby, to follow in his footsteps and pursue careers in the same field.

Above all, Hal cherished time spent creating memories with his family. Whether enjoying the sand dunes of Silver Lake, Michigan, boating on local lakes, or camping together, he found his greatest joy in shared experiences. In his younger years, he was an avid runner. He also had a lifelong passion for Jeeps, especially his beloved 1947 Willys CJ2A.

He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Joy (Zahn); his sons, Benjamin (Lynette) and Christopher (Shannon); grandchildren Brittney (Luke), Bailey (Aubriana), Brooklynn, Chloe, Shelby, Delaney, and Wyatt; and great-grandchildren Kaidyn, Noelle, Roman, Ryleigh, and Remington. He is also survived by his brothers, Richard (Debrah) and William (Tina).

He was preceded in death by his father, Earnest Joy; his mother, Anna Joy; his brother, Thomas Joy; and his daughter, Amonda Barker (Huff).

In a final act of generosity, Hal proudly donated his body to Indiana University for medical research, hoping to contribute to a breakthrough in the fight against Parkinson’s disease.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date, with details to be announced. Memorial contributions may be made to the Chasing a Cure Parkinson’s Foundation.
