Helen V. Canen, 95, of South Bend, died Monday February 12, 2018. The Linton, Indiana native was born September 12, 1922 to Charles Ray & Ola Bell (Heacox) Whittenburg. Helen was a member of River of Life Community Church in Elkhart; she served as a Foster Parent for 37 years and later worked at Bremen Health Care for several years, serving there until 86 years of age. She loved to crochet and was devoted to her family, especially caring for her grandchildren. She often remarked that "She helped the little ones when they came into the world and the elderly as they departed the world". Helen is survived by her children, Eddie Canen of Scottsdale AZ, Shirley (Thomas) Madlem of Mishawaka, Janet (Leonard) Cook of Elkhart, Melanie Rose (Nathan) Cox of Knoxville TN, Kim (Ted) Cook of Bremen, David (Sandra) Canen of Buckeye AZ; daughter-in-law, Joyce Canen of Phoenix; 21 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward H. Canen; her son, Dexter Canen and all 6 of her siblings. Funeral Services 10:00 Saturday February 17, 2018 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Hwy. Friends may call on Friday from 5-8pm in the funeral home. Burial in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
