On the morning of April 9, 2016, Riek passed away peacefully at St. Joseph Rehabilitation Institute due to complications from an injury. A woman of fire and strength, her passing was unexpected as her recovery was once again progressing miraculously. Riek was born on July 15, 1928 in Hengelo, The Netherlands to Wilhelmus and Gerharda Waenink-Mentink. Sponsored by the Sisters of St. Francis Convent of Mishawaka, Riek immigrated to the United States in 1952 to join her future husband, with whom she had been corresponding with for three years. Riek married Bernard Eggink at St. Bavo''s Church in Mishawaka on April 19, 1952. They moved to Granger in 1960 where they bought and operated a grocery store for 23 years, which became well known as Bernard''s Food Center. Riek truly enjoyed gardening, traveling, walking, and dancing. She will be remembered for her selflessness, her dedication to family, and her positive attitude in the face of adversity. Riek was a woman of strength, determination, and courage who always had a smile and was welcoming and kind to everyone she met. Riek is survived by her husband of nearly 64 years, Bernard; their five children, Josephine (Rick) Paczkowski of Warsaw, Cecilia (John) Thompson of Granger, Lucy (Jody) Davis of Granger, Rick (Kim) Eggink of Granger, and Pam (Phil) Hansing of Elkhart; six grandchildren, Jennifer Mais, Tracy Vineis, Kim Hutt, Ben Davis, Nicole Davis, and Ryan Thompson; and five great-grandchildren; her siblings in The Netherlands, Hendrik (Mini) Waenink, Willy (Leida) Waenink, Wilhelmien (Bart) Zents, Lies (Aloys) Groot Kormelink, Annie (Antoon) Eugelink, Harrie (Lies) Waenink and sister-in-law Wilhelmien Waenink. Riek was preceded in death by her parents; and by her brothers, Gradus (Bets) Waenink, Jan (Riek) Waenink, Bennie Waenink, and Tonny Waenink. Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 from 3-7 PM at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Highway, Osceola, IN 46561 with a Rosary Service beginning at 7 PM. Rev. Msgr. William C. Schooler will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial Thursday, April 14, 2016 at 10:30 in St. Pius X Catholic Church, 52553 Fir Road, Granger, IN 46530 with visitation one hour prior to mass in the church. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be directed to the St. Pius X Catholic Church Capital Campaign.
