Obituary

Herbert Jones, Jr. passed away at the age of 81 in South Bend. He was born on April 7, 1934 in Goshen, IN to Herbert A. Jones, Sr. and Flossie (Overholt) Jones. His parents preceded him in death as well as his sister, Colleen (Jones) O''Flynn. Herbert graduated from Monger, Roosevelt, Elkhart High School in 1952. He participated is sports during all grades. Upon graduating High School, Herbert was employed at CTS Corporation from 1952 to 1969. Herbert served as president of the local 941 UAW Union during some of his time at CTS. From March 1954 to March 1957, Herbert served in the 82nd and 11th Airborne as a paratrooper squad leader. He served time both in the States and overseas in Germany. He attained the rank of Sergeant. After returning to the United States, Herbert used his G.I. bill to attend Cleveland Engineering Institute where he received a diploma in Architectural Drafting. From 1969 to 1980, Herbert worked in the RV industry serving as plant Superintendent for Champion Homes and Group leader at Georgie Boy. In 1980 Herbert joined the Housing Allowance Office (Housing Assistance) as a Housing Inspector for HUD Section 8 Housing participants where he served for 16 years, retiring in 1996 at the age of 62. Herbert served part of his time as Director of Housing Evaluation. From 1996 to 2014 Herbert worked as a consultant for different housing agencies which included Community Housing Initiative and Near Northwest Neighborhood, Inc. Herbert was a housing inspector, bid specification writer and cost estimator. Herbert enjoyed: vacations once a year after retirement, his spiritual studies, his many friends, and time with family and grandchildren. He loved life and was a role model for so many people throughout the years. Surviving are his sons Anthony Joseph Jones of New Carlisle, IN, Michael Kevin Jones (Kathy Bell) of Granger, IN, and his grandchildren: Elizabeth Jones, Alexander Jones and Abram Jones of whom he loved dearly and was very proud of. Also surviving is his sister Nancy (Jones) Pixley. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 7, 2016 from 1-3 PM with the memorial service in Mr. Jones''s honor beginning at 3 PM in the Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Highway, Osceola, IN. Rev. Mardell Wilson will officiate.
