Hurben Calhoun Thompson, 87, of Bradenton FL, died Tuesday October 2, 2012 at his (summer) residence in Elkhart. Hurb was born in South Bend on July 25, 1925 to Hurben Claire and Elizabeth (Boone) Thompson and graduated from Clay High School. He was US Marine Corps veteran of WWII, serving with the 5th Marine Division, Company A and on March 7, 1945 he was wounded on the island of Iwo Jima and subsequently awarded the Purple Heart. On May 17, 1947 Hurb married Joy Galbreath. He was a member of Michiana Community Church of God in Granger and Fellowship Church of God in Florida. Hurb lectured regularly about his wartime experiences and was a member of the DeSoto Marine Corps League. He was an avid golfer, Notre Dame Football fan and enjoyed attending his grandchildren''s sporting events. In addition to his parents, Hurb was also preceded in death by his brother, John R. Thompson. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Joy Thompson; daughter, Janet L. (Peter) Miller of Granger; son, Jerry L. (Sue) Thompson of Edwardsburg; daughter, Jana L. (Mark) Pierce of Sarasota, FL; 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Rev. Denver Burns will officiate at the 11:00 Funeral Service on Monday, October 8, 2012 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Hwy. with calling one hour prior to services. Calling also Sunday 4-8pm in the funeral home. Burial in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens with full Military Honors. The family''s preferred memorial is the Wounded Warriors Project, P.O.
