James A. Brenay, age 81, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2026. James was born on December 10, 1944, in Bay City, Michigan, in Bay County. Born of his father, Arnold James Brenay and his mother Alice (Atwood) Brenay. James was preceded in death by his father, mother, step-mother (Lou Brenay), and his brother Terry Brenay.

James relocated to South Bend, Indiana, where he graduated from John Adams High School in 1963. James is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Phyllis Brenay, as well as his daughters Angela Tallman, Michelle (Brendan) Bellina, Christine (Rick) Brooks, and Jennifer (Keith) Emerson, his grandchildren Stephanie (Angel Garcia-Simental)Tallman, Stan (Jessie Ash) Tallman, Erin (Skylar Williams) Bellina, Robyn (Sasha) B., Felix Brooks, Benjamin Brooks, Joshua Brooks, Aaron (Emily) Emerson, Devan (Megan) Emerson, and great grandchildren Rynlee & Norrin Emerson, James’ brothers David Brenay, Bob (Paula) Brenay, Rick (Mindy) Brenay and his sister Missi (Richard) Emerson, and many loving nieces, nephews, friends, and associates.

James enjoyed playing the cello in high school and later taught himself how to play the guitar. He enjoyed karate, gardening, cooking, fishing, sailing, and camping. He also had a love for classic cars and enjoyed watching Notre Dame and Indiana Colts football games.

James had a strong Christian faith and loved fellowshipping with his Michiana Christian Ministries church family. He honored God by providing for his family and faithfully tithing. He was a great leader and a hard worker.

James worked in the manufacturing industry as a Tool & Die Designer and started his own company, Accurate Design. He also operated a videography business for many years and in most recent years started working at a Kennel as a Handyman and also enjoyed caring for the animals.

James will continue to be known as a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
