MISHAWAKA - James H. "Bud" Smith, 82, died Monday November 14, 2016 at home, surrounded by family. He was a South Bend native born September 5, 1934 to Harry James & Katherine (Ronchetti) Smith and he served his country in the USAir Force. He was a member of the American Legion Post #161 and the VFW Post #360. James was fondly known as Bud to family and "Smitty" to coworkers. He had retired from Ameritech, a former employee of Bendix, along with a long association with the trucking industry. In addition to his parents, Bud was also preceded in death by his infant daughter, Barbara Kay Smith and his brother, Robert Smith. He is survived by his wife of 23 years Suzanne Smith; his son, David (Barbara) Smith of Osceola; daughter in law, Karen Hupp of Elkhart; step-sons, Brian (Lynee) Perkins & Scott (Leah) Hupp, both of Elkhart; grandchildren, Dawn (Gary) Smith of South Bend, Matt (Mary) Houser of Mishawaka, Ashley Suzanne Hupp, Taylor Nicole Hupp, Nathan Francis Hupp & Eric Randall Perkins, all of Elkhart; great-grandchildren, Alexandria "Al" Balok of South Bend, Melena Houser-Estrada & Milo Houser of Mishawaka and his brother, Bruce (Sandy) Smith of South Bend. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 Thursday, November 17, 2016 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Hwy. Friends may call Wednesday 2-4 & 6-8pm in the funeral home. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens with military honors. The family''s preferred memorial is Heartland Hospice, 230 W Catalpa Dr, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
