James F. Mason, Jr., 75, of South Bend, died Sunday June 10, 2012 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. The Moundsville, WV native was born on September 27, 1936 to James F. and Bessie (Wood) Mason, Sr. On April 7, 1965, he married Ilse Schlicht in Germany. James retired after 22 years of service in the US Army. He was a member of the Ryan A. Balmer American Legion Post #161 and V.F.W. Post #360. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ilse Mason; daughters, Marion Swank of Mishawaka and Katherine F. (Howard Ennis) Mason of Norfolk, VA; grandchildren, Shawn R. Swank, Susan M. (Steven) Hunt, Chelsea R. Pierson, Amanda K. Swank, Brianna L. Swank and Shelly M. Swank, all of Mishawaka; Jessica A. (Michael) Vardaman of South Bend; great- grandchildren, Zachary A. Hammond of South Bend and Joseph M. Swank of Mishawaka and two very close & special friends, Kirk Vena and Deon Stutzman. James was preceded in death by his parents and 2 sisters, Agnes Kaye and Fayetta Jo Mason.
