On August 6, 2017, James F. Maddux, 84, passed away suddenly of an Abdominal Aortic Aneurism at IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana.

James was born on February 11, 1933 to Walter A. and Lois B. (Frye) Maddux in Charleston, TN. He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Ralph and Harold Maddux; and beloved sister Kay Satterfield. Surviving is his loving wife Doris of 61 years; children David A. Maddux of Goshen and Denise (Mike) Devereux of Elkhart. He was the proud grandfather of Michaela (Mickie) Devereux and Adam Devereux. He is also survived by his siblings Elizabeth Satterfield, Ginger Webb, Joyce Satterfield, Pat Maddux, Paul Maddux, and Charles Maddux all of Cleveland, TN area, along with many, many nieces and nephews.

James graduated from Charleston High School in 1950 in Charleston, TN. In 1952 he enlisted into the United States Air Force as an Airman First Class, working as a Jet Engine Mechanic. While serving he was awarded the National Defense Service Metal. Thru the GI Bill, he took classes at the University of Tennessee, Bethel College, Purdue University, and Goshen College. He retired from Miles/Bayer Corporation after 42 Years of service in 1998 as a Plant Project Engineer. During those years he won the Consumer Healthcare Division Technology award for Implementing Aqueous Film Coating of Vitamins. One of his many achievements was the design of an Autopsy Table which the Bayer Corporation had patented. He was an avid gardener, who learned at a young age about vegetable gardening from his mother. He was a member of the Master Gardeners fall class of 1999 in Elkhart County and he served as president in 2002. He was the first Master Gardener to achieve a Gold 5000 badge which equates to 5000 hours of service to the community. A member of the Elkhart County Extension Board, the Purdue Extension CARET, and was recognized by the Purdue Extension. He was involved in the design, layout, and maintenance of the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds Quilt Garden and served on the 4-H Fair Horticulture Committee. He also helped design and create the butterfly garden at the Jefferson Elementary School in Middlebury. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and son who enjoyed fishing, reading, golfing, and spending time with his family-especially his grandchildren.

Family and friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 PM Thursday, August 10, 2017 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Highway, Osceola, IN 46561. A funeral service in James'' honor will be on Friday, August 11, 2017 at 10 AM at the funeral home with Rev. Dr. Michael Cramer officiating with burial to follow the service in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
