James C. Powell, age 82, formerly of Elkhart, Indiana and Naples, Florida, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2012 at West Houston Medical Center in Houston, Texas. James was born February 17, 1930 in Mishawaka, Indiana to the late Sidney and Desda (Hunchey) Powell. After graduation from Jimtown High School in 1948, James served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War era. He was honorably discharged in 1954.
James is survived by his daughter Lisa (Mike) Fabian of Houston, Texas, and his son Scot (Marie) Powell of El Campo, Texas. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Emily Fabian, Christopher Fabian, Kyle Fabian, Sarah Fabian, Andrew Powell and Matthew Powell. James was preceded in death by his wife Carroll Ann in 2010 and his sister, Martha Montgomery in 2011.
Calling will be held from 2-5 pm Saturday, April 28, 2012 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Osceola. On May 4, 2012 interment will take place in the U.S. Houston National Cemetery, Houston, Texas.
James was employed for many years at RACO in South Bend, where he was the manager of tool engineering. He enjoyed fishing and spending time outdoors. James also enjoyed carpentry, and had a passion for building and maintaining vehicles. He built his children their first go-kart many years ago, which his children and many of the neighborhood children enjoyed. James also spent many seasons coaching Little League Baseball in Jimtown.
