John (Jack) Norman Crone, 94, of Noblesville, IN, died at 3:15pm Sunday, October 11, at Riverview Hospital in Noblesville surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Crone was born March 24, 1915, in Gary, to the late Norman E. and Bessie M. (Haverstock) Crone. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Irene M. (Carlson) Crone originally of South Bend whom he married on November 17th, 1945. Other survivors include two sons - John A. Crone (Kathy) of Noblesville, and Garry C. Crone (Kathy) of Zionsville, one granddaughter - Lindsay C. Kaplan (Charles), and four grandsons - J. Scott, Adam R., Brandon C., and Brian A.
Mr. Crone graduated from Horace Mann High School in Gary in 1931. He attended Indiana University - Bloomington from 1936 to 1938 where he was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity.
Jack worked for 37 years at Johnson/Penn Controls in Goshen until he retired in 1982. He remained in the South Bend area until 1995 when he and Irene moved to Noblesville to be near their sons and families.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church (Noblesville) and a former member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ (Mishawaka).
An accomplished musician, he played several musical instruments including the clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, piano, and organ. He also arranged and wrote Dance Band and Dixie Land Music of the Big Band Era. He played for several bands including the Ted Nering 12-Piece Band and later in Jimmy Cathcart''s All American Collegiate Dance Band while at IU. Most recently, he played in the Indianapolis New Horizons Concert Band from 1997 to 2007. Jack always said he enjoyed the New Horizons group more than any of the others he had played with.
He had many other interests including watching sports (baseball was his favorite), playing golf, and reading. Most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his loving family.
Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Thursday, October 22nd at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home at 10776 McKinley Highway, Osceola. A memorial celebration of Jack''s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 23rd at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Osceola, Indiana. Family graveside services will be held at Riverview Cemetery in South Bend.
