Joyce Rowan Burris Sommers was born on July 18, 1945, in South Bend, IN, to the late Franklin Emmet (Jack) Burris, and the late Lena Ilene Goltry. She went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, October 27th, 2022, in Elkhart, IN.
On October 26, 1963, she married Dale Paul Sommers at the Osceola Church of the Brethren. They recently celebrated 59 years of marriage. She is survived by her husband, four children, seventeen grandchildren and one great grandchild. Her children are Daniel (Michelle), David (Christie), Rebecca (Brian) Eastling, and Andrew (Michelle). Her grandchildren are Katherine (Anthony) Elliott, Jonathan Sommers, Austin Dixon, Kentavis Sommers, Charles Sommers, Anthony Sommers, James Sommers, Joshua (Heather) Sommers, Kirsten Sommers, Kaylee Sommers, Kendra Sommers, Theodore Eastling, Christopher Eastling, Rachel Eastling, Benjamin Eastling, Nathan Sommers, and Abigail Sommers. Her great grandchild is Josette Elliott.
Mrs. Sommers was a lifetime resident of Osceola and enjoyed being the secretary and recorder for her Penn High School reunion and Sommers family reunion for many years. She was a member of McCoy Memorial Baptist Church, Elkhart, IN, where she was an AWANA leader, Sunday School teacher, and participated in many other activities. She was also a member of Penn Neighbors Homemakers Extension Club, and longtime 4-H Leader for Penn Township and St. Joseph County. She (along with her husband) also enjoyed coordinating homes for foreign exchange students and hosting them for many years "bringing the world home" to them and other families.
Services will be held at McCoy Memorial Baptist Church, 134 St. Clair Ave, Elkhart, IN. on Saturday, November 12 th with viewing at 9am and service at 10am. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to McCoy Memorial Baptist Church or to the St. Joseph County 4-H Scholarship Fund.
Chapel Hill Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
