Obituary

Karen Lynn Hartung, born June 9, 1960 passed away August 28, 2023 following an extended illness.  She is survived by her two children Eric Nicholas Regan and Sarah Colleen Regan, her mother Betty Lou Casner Hartung Love, a brother Craig Allen Hartung, a nephew Allen Craig Hartung-Mann, a niece Tiffani Ann Hartung-Mann, all from Elkhart, and three step-brothers Richard (Betty) Love, Jr. from Florida, Ronald Dewayne Underwood and Robert Franklin Underwood Carri from South Bend.  Karen was preceded in death by her spouse Thomas William Regan, her father Claud Herbert Hartung, Jr, her step-father Richard Love, her step-mother Joyce Elane Freasier Underwood Hartung, her step-sister Rhonda Joy Underwood Binns Harold and a niece Taylor Leah Hartung-Mann.  Also preceding her in death was her lifelong best friend Terri Lynn Thompson. Karen grew up in South Bend and Elkhart and attended Memorial High School.  Her favorite school was Brookdale Junior High where she enjoyed hanging out at the pool hall with her friends.  She raised her children in Lafayette Indiana, where she attended Elmwood Church of Christ.  After moving back to Elkhart, she attended Faith United Methodist Church. She was also a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary.  Karen's health kept her from traveling but she took great pleasure in shopping for bargains or "window shopping" whether it be in-store or on-line.  She also loved to write – especially poetry.  Karen's greatest joy though, was being a mother and she will be deeply missed by her children, and also by her mother who looked at her not only as a daughter but as a best friend.  Though she had difficult times in her life, Karen was lifted up by the love of her family, her faith in God, and a quote by Hannah Gadsby – "There is nothing stronger than a broken woman who has rebuilt herself."  Visitation will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola on Tuesday, September 5 from 11 AM to 12:30 PM, followed by a private graveside service.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Karen's name to Faith United Methodist Church 22045 County Road 18, Goshen IN 46528.
