ELKHART - Larry Sommers, 78, passed away in the late evening hours of Wed. Aug. 2, 2017 in Elkhart. Larry was born Nov. 9, 1938 to the late Marvin & Ruth (Wogoman) Sommers in Elkhart, IN. On Dec. 3, 1960, he was wed to Barbara Barnes in Mishawaka.
Larry was a Veteran of the United States Army. While formerly employed with Alumax, Larry was tasked with setting up a new branch of the company in Wisconsin. While he resided there, he became a proud member of the Jaycees. Larry had a tight-knit group with the other members and loved getting together to swap stories in the wee hours of the night. In following with the Jaycee creed, "That earth's great treasure lies in human personality", he was known to enjoy the simple pleasures in life. He was an all-around sports fan. He loved the Cubs, rooted for the Packers, and appreciated our beloved Notre Dame. His family has fond recollections of him making his own entertainment during picnics and gatherings for the kids and grandkids alike. He was a genealogist and reveled in researching his family''s roots. He was dedicated to his family as a faithful husband, father, & grandfather.
Larry is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter, Lorie (Robert) Ullery of South Bend, IN; daughter-in-law, Mary Sommers of Goshen, IN; brothers, Herbert Sommers of Elkhart, IN and Ted Sommers of Florida, and 4 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Eric Sommers; sisters, Carrie Newell & Mary Nelson, and his brother, Donald Sommers.
Visitation for Larry will be held 5 pm-8 pm, Tues. Aug. 8, 2017 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Hwy, Osceola. Funeral service will be at 10 am on Wed. Aug. 9, 2017 with Pastor Bob Kulp officiating. In honor of Larry''s legacy, his family requests memorial donations are made to Hospice Foundation, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
