Lloyd J. Havens, age 88, of South Bend, formerly of Osceola, passed away December 12, 2012 at the Arbors at Southfield Village. Lloyd was born March 3, 1924 in Mountain View, Missouri to the late Lloyd Havens and Fannie (Mitchell) Baughman. On January 24, 1948, Lloyd married Helen Bryan in South Bend. She preceded him in death.
Surviving are his sons, Ronald (Marilyn) Havens of South Bend, and Gary W. (Marsha) Havens of Elkhart, along with 6 grandchildren; Angela (Jason) Cackley, Troy (Morgan) Havens, Joel Havens, Amanda Havens, Molly (Ryan Raso) Leddy, and Megan (Matthew) Rubio. Surviving as well are 5 great grandchildren; Piper Cackley, Alyssa Lundy, Molly Albert, Jax Albert and Thomas Rubio. He was preceded in death by his siblings Otis Manning, Robert Havens, Marie Gosc, Edith VanDusen, and Vera Hamilton.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 pm Friday, December 14, 2012 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Osceola. Funeral services will be held at 10 am Saturday, December 15, 2012 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home with interment to follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
Lloyd served his country as a US Marine during WWII. He was a radio operator at the battle of Tarawa, where he was responsible for calling in aircraft support and cover during the battle. Following the war, Lloyd was honorably discharged in 1945.
He was employed for 34 years as a Journeyman Electrician at Honeywell in South Bend before his retirement in 1983. Lloyd loved to play golf, walking at the mall, woodworking, working crossword puzzles and reading, bird watching and dancing with his wife. He was also an avid fan of sports, a long time attendee at Gospel Center Missionary Church in South Bend, and served as a Past Master of the Osceola Masonic Lodge # 742.
