Obituary

Lucille M. Hartman, 90, of Elkhart, passed away at 10:15 am, Tuesday, February 25, 2014 in her home following a lengthy illness with Parkinson''s. Lucille was born on March 25, 1923 in Osceola to the late Rollin and Lillian (ne Kelley) Stoner. In 1950, she married Walter Hartman. He passed away in 1992. Lucille is survived by a daughter, Ann (nee DeBowe) Alderson and a son John B. Hartman, both of Elkhart. Also left to cherish her memory are four grandchildren, Lisa Deak of Elkhart, Dennis Alderson of Mason, OH, Denise (ne Alderson) Radcliff of Upper Arlington, OH, and Diane (ne Alderson) Russell of Dacula, GA; three step children, Dan Hartman of Elkhart, Jerry Hartman of Palmetto, CA and Noreen (ne Hartman) Groom of Fair Oakes, CA, as well as many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Rose Schlundt, grandson, Ken W. Alderson and brothers, Jake, Guy, Jim, Francis and Art Stoner and sisters, Clara Carter and Annamae Furore. Lucille was known as "Pete", a nickname given to her by her five brothers, and carried on into her adult world. However, her late husband, Walter, called her "Pepper" and in her later years she happily answered to that. Lucille was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and aunt to the entire family. She will be missed by all that knew her. She was famous for her pie baking and for many years her pies were requested for church funeral dinners. Each grandchild had their own special pie when they visited Grandma''s house. She was know for enjoying life and bowled for many years with shelves of trophies at her home. Playing cards, especially euchre, was one of her favorite pastimes and she was very competitive. Often time she adjusted her daily routine in order to cheer on the Cubs, Bulls, or Lakers. In 1951, she and her late husband, Walter, co-founded Central Hardware in Elkhart. For many years, she and Walter together built the business until Walter retired in 1975. She was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church. Visitation will be held from 2:00-6:00 pm, Sunday, March 2, 2014 in Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Highway, Osceola, with prayers of remembrance to be held at 5:30 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 am, Monday, March 3, 2014 in Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 4508 Vistula Road, Mishawaka. Rev. John Eze will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery, Elkhart. Memorial Contributions may be sent to the church. The family wishes to thank the entire staff of the Center for Hospice for their exceptional care given to our mother. Also, a very special thank you to Dr. Patrick Russell for his many visits expressing his care and concern during mother''s stay at Elkhart General Hospital.
