Mabel I. Stephic, age 97, of Elkhart, Indiana, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, warmth, and unwavering devotion to her family and community.
She was born on July 27, 1928, in Bristol, Indiana, to Ray and Hattie (Rice) Replogle. Mabel grew up with strong values rooted in faith, hard work, and kindness, qualities that would define her throughout her long and meaningful life. On December 23, 1949, she married the love of her life, Franklin Stephic. Together they built a life centered on family, sharing nearly five decades of marriage until Franklin’s passing in 1998. Their bond remained a guiding light for Mabel in the years that followed.
Mabel was known for her tireless work ethic and dedication. She spent many years employed at Whitehall Laboratories, where she worked faithfully until the company’s closure in 1991. Never one to slow down, she later joined Goodwill Industries, continuing to work until the remarkable age of 90. Her commitment to service extended beyond her career, she generously volunteered her time at Harvest Basket, Christ Commissary, and Clothes for Compassion, always eager to help those in need.
A woman of simple joys and deep passions, Mabel was an avid reader with an extraordinary appetite for books, often reading four to seven each week. Stories were her constant companions, and she found comfort and excitement within their pages. She also cherished time spent bowling with the women in her family, creating laughter-filled memories that will be treasured forever.
Mabel’s home was the heart of her family. She found great joy in cooking and hosting monthly family gatherings, where everyone knew they could count on her famous chicken and noodles and her beloved no-bake chocolate cookies. These meals were more than just food, they were expressions of her love, bringing generations together around the table. Her family often joked that attendance required her signature dishes, a testament to how much they cherished both her cooking and her presence.
Mabel will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her kind heart, her strength, and the love she gave so freely to all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Franklin; her children, Donald Stephic and Patricia A. Hummel; and her great-grandson, Treyson Stephic.
Mabel is survived by her loving children, Eugene Stephic and Charles (Brenda) Stephic; her brother, Raymond Replogle; as well as a large and devoted family including 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Each of them carries forward her legacy of love, resilience, and generosity.
A visitation will be held on Friday, May 8, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Highway, Osceola, Indiana, with a funeral service to follow immediately. Mabel will be laid to rest at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
