Roberts
June 18, 1927 – November 28, 2020
After a full and blessed life, William (Bill) Roberts joined the Savior early Saturday, November 28. Bill was born in 1927 to Mantford and Beatrice Roberts in Detroit, Michigan. He married Margaret Schumacher in 1950. This September they celebrated their 70 th wedding anniversary. Bill is survived by Margaret, his wife; a daughter Deb (Dale) Billet; his son Steven (Karen) Roberts. He has 4 loving grandchildren: Stephanie (Eon) Johnson, Kimberly (Ryan) McDowell, Kyle (Samantha) Roberts and Cristine (TD) Michel. Bill enjoyed his great-grandchildren: Emilie McDowell, Madeline McDowell, Calvin Roberts, Arthur Roberts, Phare Michel, and Jerah Michel. He is also survived by his brother Richard (Nancy) in Michigan and a sister Irene Wayman in Missouri.
Bill graduated from Mishawaka High School and enlisted in the US Navy. In 1945 after WWII ended, he remained in the Navy for two more years. After receiving training in electronics, he was assigned to a photographic squadron in the Naval Air Force. After his discharge from the Navy, he attended ATIT in Chicago and received a BS in Television Engineering.
Upon graduation, Bill joined Bendix Missile Systems in South Bend. He became head of the Missile Test Engineering team that developed the first guided missile of its kind. He then went to the Ames Division of Miles where he joined a new team that developed specialized medical instruments.
Bill enjoyed bicycling and opened the House of Bicycles in Osceola in 1973. Concurrently, he worked as chief engineer at X-Cel Controls in Mishawaka, designing and developing industrial controllers. He sold the House of Bicycles in 1985. This business continues to serve the Michiana community. Leveraging his passion for engineering, he joined Electromation as Chief engineer for test equipment and retired in 1990.
After retirement Bill incorporated as TestMaster, Inc. As a consultant he designed, built, and programed automated test equipment for several companies in the area until his second retirement in 2014.
Since 1962 Bill has been an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served positions as president of the congregation, council member, taught Bible classes, served as an elder, and numerous other committees.
Over the years he enjoyed helping others, bicycling, white water rafting, traveling, tinkering and building computers, gardening to feed family and friends, working crossword puzzles and Sudoku – in ink!!
In Lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Trinity Lutheran Church (30888 CR – 6, Elkhart) or the Baugo Lions Club.
Due to Covid restrictions, the funeral will be held with the immediate family.
